Education

Explore our diverse range of programs and projects designed to ignite change and drive impact.

why

Education

Poverty has a negative impact on the quality and quantity of schooling in the slums. Seven out of ten slum adolescents drop out of school after Primary Seven owing to a lack of school fees, career counseling, or simply their parents’ refusal to enroll them for further education. As a result, YSU has several programs in place to aid access to and retention of children in school.

OUR CONTRIBUTION

Education Programs & Projects

 Level Up!

The project funded by Swiss Academy for Development aims to support 2,250 young refugees and disadvantaged youth from host communities to complete their basic education in an inclusive and healthy environment and to find decent (self-) employment.

To achieve this goal, the project (1) improves equitable access to inclusive and interactive quality education and (2) equips the young people with the competencies and skills they need to find decent employment or start their own business.

Through this project, YSU hopes to contribute to the successful completion of quality basic education in an inclusive and healthy learning environment and to the vocational integration of young refugees and disadvantaged youth from host communities (13 to 25 years) in Kampala District, Uganda.

Naguru Social Sport School

This project funded by Xcalibur Foundation and Real Madrid Foundation aims to promote continuous and formal education for the personal growth and development of over 200 children and youth in situations of vulnerability and social exclusion in Uganda, using sport as a motivational tool.

Using trained coaches, social workers and teachers, the intervention integrates sports and social development in government schools located in different regions outside Kampala. By fostering participation in sports, the initiative seeks to promote holistic development among school children, with a focus on inclusivity, community involvement, and capacity-building for school staff.

Story-telling and Sports Education

The storytelling concept, introduced to YSU by Child Play International serves as a powerful tool for education, transcending traditional classrooms. It also intended to work as a dynamic mean of impacting knowledge, fostering creativity, development of life skills and instilling valuable lessons in children. Using the Child’s Play International manual, the project reaches out to over 1000 children in primary schools in Uganda.

The story telling sessions fused some sport and play are conducted every Friday from 3 to 4pm outside the classroom. The storyteller, usually a local community member picks from a collection of old folk Ugandan and African stories that bring back the long forgotten way of teaching morals and values to children.

The children are able to express themselves in both art and public speaking, as they share the lessons learnt from the sessions.

Social Inclusion and Social Cohesion (SISCo)

The initiative that was supported by GIZ used the Athletics for Development approach to increase social cohesion among refugee hosting communities. It was carried out in the 5 refugee hosting divisions of Kampala, both in schools and communities. The target population for each community and school was 800 participants. There were 5 villages and 5 schools involved. The coaches conducted activities at community safe spaces as well as in primary and secondary schools that welcome refugees. The project also targeted refugee and host community children who were not in school and had difficulty accessing resources for integration. Both the A4D festival and the community outreaches took place throughout the communities as a means to encourage peaceful co-existence, community cohesion and the inclusion on vulnerable groups. Several refugee youths would love to sustain this initiative through the support of stakeholders.

Child Sponsorship

Charlenes’ Project and Youth of Uganda, our partners from Ireland have been generous in supporting over 66 girls to attain secondary school education. With termly school fees, the project has had a completion rate of 89% with all the girls attaining at least their A-levels, and some going on to join higher institutions of learning. The sponsorship project is still ongoing, and if you believe in the power of education, please reach out to YSU for more information.

Adult Literacy

The majority of the parents of the youth in our education and skill development program are illiterate. It is difficult to keep children in school when parents do not respect education. Basic literacy skills are provided to 68 parents and caregivers (92% refugees, 8% host community).

The adult literacy program aids in the social integration of refugees into the society following their displacement. As a result of this effort, a number of Village Savings and Loans Associations have been established and maintained.

Our Mission

To offer educational, health and life skills opportunities to vulnerable youths in Uganda through harnessing the power of sport.
